School Connectivity Program
The SCP Program.

T

With the advent of the 21st century, ADCOME resorted to the CIAC (Computer and Internet Access Centers) Project as a means of empowering local communities towards the challenges resulting from globalization and technological change. The School Connectivity Program (SCP) was born from this project in 2002.

The project is realized by providing secondary and high schools with Multimedia centers.  Each multimedia center has at least 20 computers connected to the internet as well as accessories such as a printer, UPS, voltage stabilizers to ensure the smooth running of the center. This Program also offers job opportunities to unemployed university graduates who also have an Information Technology (IT) background. Some of the graduates who do not have sufficient IT knowledge are trained by ADCOME´s IT Academy and then sent to work on the field as IT instructors in SCP schools.

The focus of the School Connectivity Program is to bridge the gap between Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and education by providing internet and computer access to youths while they are still in secondary schools so that with relevant knowledge on ICT they can conveniently pursue a university degree or integrate in to an IT dominated work place.

The main objectives of the SCP are to:

·          To improve access to ICT resources for students.

·          To improve ICT skills of students.

·          To improve technology to support ICTs in school curriculum.

Until 2005, ADCOME had been running the project without any significant partnership. The need to meet up with this social challenge led to the partnership with the MTN Foundation of Cameroon in the same year. With their financial and technological support, through MTN Network Solutions we were able to provide multimedia centers in several schools with computers and cheaper access to the internet.  Besides the ADCOME IT Academy, IAI Cameroon (Institute for African Computer Sciences) also trained some of the IT Instructors who managed and delivered lectures at the specific centers. The project is aimed at providing youths in schools with more than just computer literacy skills. The SCP is designed to improve the status of education in Cameroon, to provide employment to recent graduates and to reduce poverty through ICTs.

From 2002 to 2009, the SCP led to the installation of 46 multimedia centers and assisted the running of several others in and out of the educational domain. Since the start of 2010 the impact of ADCOME is estimated to about 70,000 students 4,000 teachers and about 90 field and administrative staff.  In spite of this reach, Cameroon government statistics still show a large percentage of students and teachers un-reached by ICTs. Based on these statistics, starting from this year 2010, ADCOME plans to extend the SCP in at least 60 more schools in rural and urban communities in the next three years.

The new SCP package starting from 2010 comprises of; at least 25 computers, a projector, voltage stabilizers, UPS, generators (as need may be), and the One PC per teacher initiative to ensure that the development of teaching staff goes along side that of their students.
