CURRENT DIRECTION

In 2005, ADCOME, with the assistance of Tshepo Thlaku, formed a partnership with MTN (a South African Telecommunications company) to expand the project to more schools around the country. The MTN Foundation agreed to sponsor the construction of 50 computer labs in secondary schools by the year 2010. To date the MTN School Connectivity Project, as a part of the C.I.A.C. project, has attracted attention from all over the world. Currently, ADCOME is searching for additional financial support to expand the C.I.A.C. Project to other parts of Cameroon and Africa.

In a relatively small period of time ADCOME has become the leading ICT organization in Cameroon. We believe that ICT integration into the community is a key component to sustainable development locally, nationally, and regionally. In the future we plan to expand our programs even further and continue working towards our mission of "Bridging IT and Education".

SHIFT IN FOCUS

In 2002, ADCOME shifted its focus from increasing internet access to "Bridging IT and Education." In 2002, we launched the Computer and Internet Access Centers (C.I.A.C.) Project which was designed to introduce secondary school students to computer and information technologies. The project began by installing computer labs in two local schools: Baptist High School and IMPAAS Secondary School. By 2004 a total of six schools were involved in the C.I.A.C. project.

During the Computer and Internet Access Centers Project, ADCOME extended its services to adult education programs as well. In 2003, ADCOME signed an agreement with the National Employment Fund to teach adult training courses in order to give unemployed individuals a better chance of finding employment. We offer basic computing and web designing courses along with leadership and managerial training which allow individuals to develop the skills necessary to succeed in the local economy. To date we have trained over 14 web designers with plans to expand the project in the near future.

How @DCOME Started
The Association for Development, Communication, and Environment (ADCOME) was established in 1999 under the direction of Roland Kwemain.  At that time ADCOME´s mission was to provide affordable documentation, photocopy, and phone services to students and residents in and around the University of Buea campus.  As time went on, the organization continued to expand its services in order to meet the needs of the community.

In 2000, ADCOME began organizing workshops, seminars, and conferences to train university students and local residents in the use of information and communication technologies.  Later that year, a partnership with the Provincial Delegation of Women´s Affairs offered these ICT courses to several Women´s groups in the area.

By 2001, ADCOME expanded its services once again and became the leading Internet Service Provider in Buea.  At that time, Internet access was a luxury that only few could afford; the cost of creating an email address was 3000 CFA, while an hour on the internet was 6000 CFA.  ADCOME tried to make internet access affordable for everyone.  In two years, our organization created over 5000 free emails and helped to bring down the cost of internet service to 500 CFA per hour.  By that time many other Internet Service Providers were establishing themselves in and around Buea and we realized that our objective of "Bringing the Internet Closer to People" had been achieved.
